Nest-egg projection

Compound current savings and monthly contributions to see surplus, shortfall, and extra savings needed.

Use this nest-egg path to explore how much money do you need to retire and how much should I save for retirement if contributions and returns follow the example.

Labels the illustrated state and tax-year pack. This tool’s numbers do not change with state income tax. Medicare, HSA, 401(k), and RMD rules stay federal.

Assumptions

  • Contributions are assumed monthly through the retirement year. Returns are constant and educational.
  • Inflation, taxes, and Social Security are not deducted from the nest-egg goal.
  • SECURE 2.0 RMD start age for an owner age 55 in 2026 is 75.
  • Employee elective deferrals for 2026 are generally capped at $32,500 including catch-up where age applies (IRS Notice 2025-67).
  • Rule year 2026: IRS federal income tax (2026-rev-proc-2025-32) and California state rules (2026-enacted-v1; progressive income tax). Medicare IRMAA, HSA, 401(k), and RMD tables are federal.
