Roth conversion tax estimate

Apply a current tax rate to a conversion amount and grow the Roth balance for a chosen period.

This illustration supports retirement income planning by estimating tax due now versus hypothetical Roth growth. It is one of several retirement solutions, not a retirement planning financial advisor.

Selects the matching state income-tax pack for this tax year. Medicare, HSA, 401(k), and RMD rules stay federal.

Assumptions

  • Federal tax due is the incremental 2026 IRS tax from adding this conversion to other ordinary income.
  • State tax uses the shared 2026 California engine (2026-enacted-v1; progressive brackets). California excludes Social Security benefits from state taxable income.
  • Assumes tax is paid from outside the converted amount so the full conversion can grow in Roth.
  • 2026 MAGI is at IRMAA tier 1 and would be lookback income for estimated 2028 Medicare premiums (age 65+).
  • Rule year 2026: IRS federal income tax (2026-rev-proc-2025-32) and California state rules (2026-enacted-v1; progressive income tax). Medicare IRMAA, HSA, 401(k), and RMD tables are federal.
