Federal pensions and Thrift Savings Plan balances need the same tax and withdrawal timeline as an IRA. Social Security and Medicare do not follow a separate Virginia calendar.
State retirement tax context
Virginia uses progressive income-tax brackets in the 2026 RetirementNeuron tax pack (2026-projected-v1; Virginia Tax). Bracket amounts live in that pack and can change. The pack excludes Social Security benefits from Virginia taxable income. Federal taxation of benefits is separate. Traditional retirement-account withdrawals and Roth conversions can be taxable under that pack. Medicare remains a federal program. This description is not a filing position, a guarantee, or a substitute for the tax pack.
Social Security claiming, Roth conversions, and Medicare IRMAA are covered in the topic hubs. Those questions are not separate Virginia city pages.
